Morning Oil Report 16/10/20

Good morning all. Brent crude futures for December dropped 44 cents, or 1.0%, to $42.72 a barrel by 0437 GMT, while WTI for November delivery fell 40 cents, or 1.0%, to $40.56 a barrel. Both Benchmarks are set to remain relatively unchanged for the week.

London now finds itself creeping slowly up the government’s watchlist as virus cases grow, but even with news of crude draws in the US, oil slipped 2% on Thursday as lockdowns loom in a bid to get Covid-19 under control until a vaccine can be produced.

Key news from Thursday was the larger than expected draws as a result of Hurricane Delta in the US as 91% of crude output was offline as the high winds battered the region, sparking the mass evacuation of platform workers. Draws were expected at 2.8 million barrels, but figures revealed 3.8 million barrels reduction in US inventories. Distillates reported a draw of 7.2 million barrel and crude output was down on average of 500,000 barrel per day to 10.5 million bpd. (Reuters)

OPEC+ went a little way in enforcing the supposed compensatory cuts due in August of 2.38 million barrels per day. September’s level of compensatory cuts stood at 2.33 million barrels per day. (Reuters)

What it is ensuring is that oil prices globally will not plunge in the same fashion that was seen back in Q2, and this will be the main objective of the meeting of OPEC+ at the end of November, as although fuel demand is recovering, it is so in a much slower way than previously expected. (Reuters)
