Morning Oil Note 7/9/20

Good morning all. Brent futures fell -1.2% to $42.13 a barrel to lowest levels since July 30 whereas WTI futures were down -1.51% to $39.17 per barrel, lowest since July 10.

As the US enjoys Labor Day, parts of the states are preparing to welcome record heatwaves with California grid operators issuing a “stage 2” power emergency late on Saturday with outages a possibility according to report from Reuters. The heatwave has also bought with it the 2nd and 3rd largest forest fires in the state’s history.

The IEA has issued a round-up that states the global economy is not likely to enter into any major slowdowns, but uncertainty over China’s oil demand and built up supplies could affect the recovery into the next year. Demand is not expected to experience any robust growth, yet it does seem to be stabilising with this sentiment set to last, given that oil plummeted to historic lows, prices are hovering around the $40 per barrel with analysts expecting prices to be range bound at around $40-$45 per barrel.

Staying with Crude, Chinese imports climbed 13% year on year thanks to plentiful orders at the collapse of the oil price, and delayed orders dating back to Q2. Import levels are equivalent to 11.18 million barrels per day according to the General Administration of Customs which were snapped up at the trough of the oil price throughout the pandemic. Refinitiv data shows 20 vessels are off the port of Qingdao, waiting to offload their cargoes.

Finally, some sites that that were considerably damaged by Hurricane Laura are yet to be put back into operation due to the damage that was sustained, but thankfully these damages have not threated the sealed underground caverns according to US energy department.
