Morning Oil Report 4/1/21

Good morning all and a very Happy New Year to you!

Brent crude for March was at $52.42 a barrel, up 62 cents or 1.2%, by 0348 GMT before reaching highs of $53.17 but 0615GMT while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude for February rose 55 cents, or 1.1%, to $49.07 a barrel.

Oil prices have surged this morning as the dollar weakens and investors are poising for a recovery, with OPEC+ producers stating that they may cap oil output at current levels as virus cases in the west have begun to get further out of control.

Iran’s parliament has lowered the expected export target of oil after it was deemed to be too optimistic given the current sanctions imposed by the US amongst other factors for why the proposed target of two million barrels a day was revised down to 1.5 million barrels per day. The past year has seen exports or Iranian oil at below one million barrels a day due to the Strict US sanctions and the hit in demand for oil as a result of the global pandemic. (S&P Global Platts)

A Chinese buyer has been awarded a 5-year contracts of the supply of Iranian oil with the terms outlining prepayments starting from the 1st July 2020, as SOMO looks to fill a deficit in state finances left by the crashing oil prices in 2020. The deal quantity looks to be in the region of 4 million barrels a month of Basrah crude oil. (S&P Global Platts)

Russian oil output fell to the lowest levels since 2011 and production fell for the first time since 2008 as a deal was struck to limit output following sluggish demand recovery since the pandemic. Russian oil and gas condensate output declined to 10.27 million barrels per day (bpd) last year, according to energy ministry data cited by the Interfax news agency. (Reuters)
